So much is happening in the world right now that my original idea for my March recap already feels a bit out of date. But here it is anyway, a few snapshots with a few reflections.
My first idea was to write about the joy of saying yes. On LinkedIn, we often talk about how to say no (and that’s something I do struggle with). But I also try to pay attention to the moments when I say yes, and it turns out well.
Like twelve years ago, when I said yes to writing a travel guide to Nice. I never expected that, in March 2025, I’d be holding yet another updated edition in my hands. But here we are. (Today is actually the ten years anniversy of the first print run).
In March, I also went back to Uppsala for a university reunion. It was fun to reconnect – and a bit surreal to hear what people have made of their lives (so far). Several commented on how I seem to spend a lot of time outdoors. I try to, whenever I can. This month that meant I added snowdrops in Uppsala, and Roman ruins in Riez to my memory card (Roman ruins are a bit of a side project – more on that another time.)
Another theme I wanted to highlight this month: how good it is to be part of a union. I was in Brussels twice in March, and each time I passed the EU flags I felt proud. Proud that we still choose to collaborate, argue, and move forward – together. Given what’s happening in the world, I think we need to talk more about what the EU makes possible. Let’s stop moaning about regulations. If something isn’t working, we can fix it. Together.
One of the reasons I was in Brussels was the last general assembly of (this phase of) IRISS – International SSbD network – an EU-funded initiative to accelerate the shift towards Safe and Sustainable by Design in the chemical industry. I’ve been part of it in a small way, representing IKEM – Innovations- och kemiindustrierna i Sverige. After the meeting I asked the project team what they think made the project so successful, and they answered: people. That felt right.
So, how to summarise March? Say yes to the right projects. Work with good people. Appreciate collaboration. And take the opportunity to experience things – outdoors, in passing, or simply by stopping for a photo.
I’ll try to keep doing that in April, too.
